MOD Fire Booster sets

To meet the Crown Fire Standards it was recommended to install new dedicated fire mains and hydrants around the sites with new fire boosters sets(s) at specific MOD locations.

KGN Pillinger was approached to manufacture the new fire booster sets that will automatically engage when a fire hydrant is used to deliver the required fire flows. The pump set consists of one electric and one diesel pump. The electric pump operates from the base non essential electricity supply and the diesel pump is a back in case the main electricity supply fails. A jockey pump is also installed to maintain the pressure in the fire main in association with an expansion vessel. In operation as a hydrant is opened the pressure in the main drops, initially the water loss is made up from the expansion vessel until a set point is reached on a pressure switch when the jockey pump starts - to maintain the flow and pressure in the system. If the pressure falls further due to demand then the main electric pump is brought into action and this will continue to pump until either or all of the hydrants are closed or the electricity supply is lost in which case the diesel pump set is automatically started.

A double skinned GRP kiosk houses the booster set for the following reasons – security, ease of maintenance, weatherproofing as well as aesthetics.
